A Polish adaptation by director Maciej Kawalski of the eponymous novel by Bolesław Prus, often called "the greatest Polish novel." Wealthy, ambitious merchant Stanisław Wokulski falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful but vain Izabela Łęcka, and his unrequited passion drives him into a series of unwise decisions that seal his fate. A sweeping panorama of life in Warsaw in the second half of the 19th century, screened as part of the CineLibri film-and-literature festival.
