Bacchae

A contemporary staging of Euripides' tragedy directed by Javor Gardev — a Bulgarian-Greek co-production of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre with the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the National Theatre of Northern Greece. It follows the myth of Dionysus's return to his native Thebes and the clash between the rational order of the polis and the god's seductive chaos — a theme the director links to today's fear of "the Other." The British avant-garde trio The Tiger Lillies make a special appearance, performing eleven original songs. The play is performed in English, with surtitles in English, Bulgarian and Greek.
