Kinomania 40: God Laughs

In the 17th century, amid a devastating plague, the monk Leopold speaks of God in a new, joyful way the Church — which preaches coldly, in Latin — never has. His message wins thousands of hearts, but word reaches Rome, where it is seen as a threat to a power that rules through fear. The Pope assigns the case to Cardinal Maculani, and the trial becomes a fateful confrontation. A drama by director Giovanni Veronesi (original title "Dio ride" — "God Laughs", Italy, 2026), the closing film of the Venice Film Festival.
