Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927) is regarded as the first major science-fiction film in cinema history. Set in a divided futuristic city, it shows an elite ruling class living in luxury while workers toil underground keeping running the machinery that sustains the city. At its centre is Freder, son of the city's ruler, who falls in love with Maria, a compassionate young woman from the working class. The film raises questions still relevant today about the cost of technological progress, the mechanisms of power, social inequality and the dehumanisation of people, and it was the first feature film inscribed on UNESCO's "Memory of the World" register. The screening is part of the Cinelibri 2026 film festival.
